Day Trip From Sofia: Tsari Mali
A while ago we decided to go to a restored fortress that is just one hour away from Sofia and makes the perfect day trip away from the city. Here’s our photo essay!
“Tsari Mali” is situated on a hill near the city of Samokov and the Belchin village. The complex represents a large ancient village. There are also remains of a Roman fortress. Until the 19th century there were still parts of the fortress that were preserved – like the towers and the white stone walls.
Now you can walk along the complex, visit the archeological museum or the small church.
As you can see from the photo there is a rope bridge about 100 meters long that connects the historic sites with the amusement park nearby (which we didn’t see considering it was still winter).
You can go to the top of the hill by foot – it will take you about 20 minutes or you can take the funicular (panorama lift). Keep in mind that it doesn’t work on Tuesdays and around noon, so schedule your visit.
